I made a new GPU profile, yay! This time it is for my RX 590. The ultimate incarnation of the legendary Polaris architecture.

Graphics Card description

The RX 590 launched in late 2018 as a refresh to AMD's mid-range 500 series lineup. The card is based on the same Graphics Core Next 4th Generation "Polaris" silicon as used in the RX 580 and RX 480 before that, but is ported to GlobalFoundries' newer 12nmLP process to allow for higher clock speed at the same voltage or lower power at the same clock speed. AMD chose to put all the process gains into increasing the GPU core clock significantly, which now runs at over 1.5 GHz, at the expense of power efficiency. The memory subsystem remains unchanged with 8GB standard of GDDR5 operating at 8 Gbps. The card launched for $279 USD, which was more expensive than the card it was aimed at competing with. However, it was faster, but not really great value. As of the time of writing RX 590 cards have dropped to around $199-219 and this card competes directly with the GeForce GTX 1660.

Graphics Card approximate 3D Performance

Sasha's gaming performance rating (2020): Great for 1080p High settings 60 FPS

Radeon RX 590 is a low-mid range graphics card that offers gaming performance very similar to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 (non-Ti). It is about 10% faster than the GTX 1060 6GB and RX 580, and can be over 20% faster than the first graphics card based on this silicon: the RX 480 (entirely due to custom designs not throttling, and signficiantly increased clock speeds due to manufacturing process differences). Performance is well suited for 1920x1080 monitors and 60 Frames Per Second with near max graphics settings. Some more demanding games will require reduced settings or lower average Frame rate.


Typical Board Power: AMD does not officially state a TBP for RX 590 cards on their website. However, the rough board power range for most 590 cards is in the 180-225 W range. Please note that in some gaming situations the card will draw less than this, this is just the specified amount of power the BIOS is programmed to allow without any overclocking.

Maximum GPU Temperature: There is no official maximum safe temperature listed for RX 590 that I can find but at stock operation the GPU would be safe to around 95*C going by the silicon used in my understanding. Please note GPU safe temperature is reduced as the voltage climbs out of the normal operating range.


This bit is for my personal opinion on this Graphics card / Graphics processor
