Details

Development on a new warship to replace the aging Retribution-class battlecruiser began in 3598 after a Naval Review, with designs for a new class put forward by Naval Draftsmen in 3601. The review called for a fast battlecruiser capable of operating with forward cruiser elements, whilst maintaining the offensive and defensive capabilities expected of the class; effectively bridging the gap between the heavier Revenge-class battleships and the smaller Vengeance-class heavy cruisers. Designs for the Endeavour-class were put forward to the three major Shiprwights, with A.R.A.S Shipyards Lorentis subsequently being awarded the contract to build the new vessel. Improving on its predecessor in every aspect, Endeavour-class carry state-of-the art technology and are considered highly by their crews. As of 4015 A.D, Endeavour-class warships made up the backbone of the Federal Navy's heavy strike capability and capital fleet and had recieved many major upgrades over its long, 4-century service.

S1A
The S1A designation was given to Endeavour-class battlecruisers that recieved an upgrade package standardised in 3620 A.D to address concerns over the class's field performance on trials. The major changes include a significantly more efficient shield generator and improved electronic Systems including the first fully integrated non-human control platform based on the Ship-Board-Computer Operating System.

S2
Officially standardised in 3646, S2 designation was given to vessels that received numerous upgrades, primarily to defensive aspects in light of growing tensions with other Aquarian nations. Using an upgraded shield generator and significantly increased armour thickness, Series 2 Endeavours were heavier than Series 1s but better protected. This upgrade was deemed necessary if a war with Phoenix was to break out, primarily in response to the larger, then better protected CEG-era Battleships employed bu the Phoenix Navy.

S2A
Implemented 10 cycles after the S2 design standardisation, S2A designation was given to Series 2 vessels that received an upgraded drive package to address concerns of the Series's higher mass and keep up with advances in Light Cruiser designs. Series-2A Endeavours also recieved the latest Jump Drive technology, further enhancing their inter-sector range.

S2B
In 3705 A.D, vastly deteriorating relations with the Aquarius Cluster's other major human power; the Phoenix Republic, called for a revision to the Endeavour-class. Major upgrades were made to the warship's main battery and for the first time, new Series-2s under S2B classification featured a significantly upgraded powerplant. The improved firepower was considered necessary by UTN Naval Commanders if a war was to break out between the Unified Terran Nations and the Phoenix Republic.

S3A
Standarised in 3725 A.D four cycles after war between the UTN and Phoenix Republic broke out, the first of the Series-3 Endeavours classified S3A was major overhaul of the nearly two-century old warship. Series 3A vessels featured an entirely new fire control and eletronic system, incorporating semi-sentient Adaptive Harmonics control systems (based on Enhanced Logic Interface 3.0, or E.L.I.3/ 'Ellie')after A.I laws were relaxed in the early 38th century. Major revisions to the vessel's armour were made. Implementing Polaryte-Iso composite non-metalic fibres to reduce weight and increase kinetic absorbtion, the resulting belt thickness was reduced to lower the weight of the vessel and increase mobility at little to no expense of protection. Series 3A vessels feature full AHS integration, including in a significantly improved shielding array based on the AHS-capable MOD10 "Temple" platform.

The result of this upgrade package was a major increase in shielding potency, firepower and combat efficiency. The Series 3A remains the most successful and numerous revision of the Endeavour-class in history, with 60 vessels built. This version served extensively in the UTN-Phoenix conflict.

S4
In 3825 A.D, 100 cycles after the Series 3 introduction, and after the war with Phoenix had passed its climax - UTN Federal Navy command ordered a major upgrade of the now aging Series 3A Endeavour. The upgrade planned to produce a 'Super Battlecruiser' with major overhauls to firepower, defence and the first use of a fully sentient Artifical Intelligence - which was deemed necessary after the outstanding performance of the first 'Ellie' equipped Endeavour-S3A. The project was ultimately a failure due to enrormous costs of production and operation and the Series-4 were considered by their captains to be "too heavy" and "cumbersome" to operate, despite having some of the best and most potent technology available at the time. The Project was canceled with only 8 vessels built, due to economic pressure on the UTN after the Invasion of Phoenix in 3776 A.D.

S5A
Drafted in 4003 A.D, shortly after the turn of the 4th Millenium, the S5A was commissioned to revise the failed Series 4 Endeavours and produce a new, fast battlecruiser with the latest technology available to the Federation at the time. The Series 5 project borrowed signficant design and system upgrades and technology from the legendary 'Pathfinder', and Captain Ronin Kociero personally oversaw the project. Considered an entirely new design, Series-5A Endeavours are the first UTN warships to feature an entirely Directed Energy Weapon main battery; based on experimental 'Ion Maser Cannon' technology. In addition, the series is the first UTN warship to feature a Reactionless drive package for unparraleleld space mobility. In order to meet the new design's strict mass requirements, the carrier-capability of the warship was reduced to only a single escort corvette and reductions to strikecraft and gunship docking facilities.

Combined with reduced armour thickness (mitigated by significant improvements to armour composition and design) and improved propulsion and powerplant, the Series 5 is one of the fastest and most agile capital ships ever built by the UTN. The class was designed to 'sharpen the edge' of the Federal Navy's sword well into the 4th Millenium. Unfortunately, due to increased cost and complexity, only 20 Series-5As were completed by the time of the start of the Radacri wars in 4015 A.D - not enough to make any significant difference in the ultimate fate of the Federation.
