(ATIS) AIN B-Type FIMD-1050-2S Mass Driver Turret
The standard Heavy Mass Driver Turret used by the Aquarian Imperial Navy. A dual-linked FIMD-1050MM/500M sub-calibre Fusion Impulse Mass Driver system designed for short-to-mid range engagements against frigates or smaller ships. It is primarily used on the AIN's SP-class Light Escort Cruiser.

The FIMD-1050-2S is one of the largest kinetic FIMD (Fusion Impulse Mass Driver) systems still in use with the Aquarian Imperial Navy. After the final "big-gun" Battlecruisers of the Old Federal Navy were retired, the newer warships utilised only "A-Type" IMPAC Particle Accelerator Cannons as their primary armaments. However, the utility of firing a shell with a configurable internal payload remained, as such these weapons are still widely used on escort vessels.
The 1050-2S was initially designed for the SP-class Light Escort Cruisers / Destroyers, with emphasis on using a 500mm sub-calibre with a discarding sabot casing, allowing significantly higher velocities with the option to also fire slower, full-calbre 1050MM projectiles. The standard loadout for this weapon is 500MM Sub-calibre Proximity Space Burst Fragmentation (PSBF) ammunition. The PSBF munition contains a configurable fuse system that can detect objects in proximity with radio bursts, or be set to a specific timer, for example. These munitions contain a high-powered Fusion Impulse Charge (FIC) core explosive with an ultra-dense macropolymer/tungsten alloy mix shell that when detonating, releases a rapidly expanding sphere of micro shrapnel that can damage the systems on larger ships, or outright destroyer smaller ones.
These "Flak" shells are the primary method of AIN Escort ships engaging large numbers of smaller vessels at medium range.
Due to the unique application of being a short/mid-range weapon, FIMD-1050-2S turrets are only equipped on escort-type vessels. Currently, the primary users of this weapon are the Eel-class Heavy Frigate and the SP-class Light Escort Cruiser / Destroyer.
